Enjoy individual attention in the tranquil setting of Wellington's Botanic Gardens at Carter Observatory. Within 5 minutes walk of the CBD, located at the top of Wellington's iconic Cable Car, guests can enjoy natural light, amazing views, and a unique atmosphere - all in a world-class visitor dedicated to celebrating the stories of the Southern Skies.
Carter's spaces can accommodate 8 -100 - day or night. Whether it is for colleagues, friends and family, Carter can help you achieve an event like no other. From cocktail receptions to conferencing, and daytime meetings to dinners, we will be able to accomodate your group in a venue that is out of this world!
We offer in-built display technology, multiple break-out spaces, and the region's only digital full-dome theatre where guests can dine under the stars. Add a guided tour, telescope viewing or planetarium show to your programme - and allow us to tailor an event that is totally unique.
Available 7 days, 8.30am - 11.00pm. IT, video projection, screens, whiteboard, variable lighting, blackout and microphones available. Accessible for wheelchairs.

Venue spaces
There are multiple space available within Carter to hosting events. Each room has its own theme that can excite and/or focus your group. Spaces include:
Carter's auditorium/planetarium seats 60 people plus 2 wheelchair spaces. It offers a unique full-dome digital theatre experience like no other. Your guests can take an amazing virtual journey through space or the seating can be removed for a unique and impressive room for cocktails and canapes, or a unique dining experience under the stars.
The Exploration Room is ideal for conferences (up to 100 people), board meetings (up to 30 people), classroom (up to 60 people) and dining (up to 60 people). It is a simple environment enabling you to theme the room as required or use it as a professional business space. The room looks out over the Wellington Botanic Garden, giving natural light. It offers power, video projection, variable lighting, blackout, microphones, and staging. It will be able to access a secure wireless network from May 2010.
The Pickering Gallery is located outside the Exploration Room and is ideal for buffets, and morning and afternoon tea. Alternatively groups of up to 20 people can utilise this space as a break-out area in a classroom style.
The Aurora Room is best suited to small meeting groups (8-10). It also offers fantastic natural light through windows that look at at the surrounding gardens. A secure wireless network, power, video projection, variable lighting and blackout are all available.
There are multiple areas for mingling, relaxing and food. These areas are all exhibition areas featuring multimedia displays, artefacts, interactive exhibits and audiovisual kiosks. There spaces range from those with a high-tech feel (foyer and galleries) to those that celebrate the heritage flavour of the Carter Observatory (library and telescope dome). They are great for drinks, canape receptions or as small session break out spaces.
Foyer, Telescope Dome, Library are suitable for up to 20 people, Cosmology Gallery has room for up to 40 people, and Solar System Gallery for 60 people. Note: the Cosmology and Solar System Galleries are inclusive with full venue hire only.
