Accessibility to Carter

Carter Observatory is an accessible visitor attraction.

Many visitors arrive at Carter from the Wellington Cable Car. The Cable Car is accessible at both ends of the journey, including all stations in between.

There is a designated disabled carpark right outside our front door, with additional parking available by prior arrangement.

This parking space is accessed via Salamanca Road, at the turn off to the Meterological Office at the top of Bolton Street.

Inside, we are a wheel chair friendly environment, with the exception of our Thomas Cooke Telescope Dome located up a flight of 12 stairs.

The environment contains number of galleries that are relatively dark with colourful, bright backlit panels, rich in colour and text.

The galleries have a number of multimedia kiosks with video clips and can get noisy in rare moments when several of them are playing at the same time.

There are two allocated wheelchair spaces inside our planetarium - no one should miss that show! There is also a designated disabled bathroom onsite.

For an independant accessible perspective, check out this online story by Travability from a visit in March last year.

Here at Carter, we are working hard to be as accessible to every visitor as we can be, although we are the first to admit there is more to be done.

Be reassured that we are working to address the issues raised by our visitors in our furture developments.

We look forward to welcoming you here at Carter Observatory.
